Our School

Sir Winston Churchill PS

We acknowledge that our learning is taking place on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Territory. We thank the Algonquin Nation for hosting us and recognize their enduring presence on this land.

Our School

Sir Winston Churchill PS (SWC), opened its doors in 1966. Warmth, strength, loyalty, care, curiosity, and determination are qualities that we foster each and every day. The school's colours are green and yellow. Our school's mascot is a bulldog, most commonly known as "Winnie.” Our school mission is built upon the core values of “Responsibility, Integrity and Excellence”.

SWC offers a bilingual 50/50 Kindergarten program and an Early French Immersion program to students from Grades 1-6. SWC also has three specialized classes.

Our Students

SWC is a French Immersion Center with an enrollment of approximately 415 students that reflect the multicultural diversity of our community. Our students are involved in many school activities and benefit from enriched activities both in and out of the classroom. A love for learning is nurtured through sharing lived experiences and culture, engaging and learning from community partners, and being involved in extracurricular activities.

Our Staff

The staff at Swc is committed to promoting excellence in a safe and inclusive learning environment. Our academic team consists of 23 teachers, 8.5  Educational Assistants, 10 Early Childhood Educators, 1 Learning Resource teacher, 1.5 Office Staff, a Custodial Team, a Breakfast Monitor and a Library Technician. Our staff members show a high commitment for student’s emotional, social and academic learning. Within a nurturing environment there is a focus on growth mindset, critical thinking skills, a passion for learning and a love of the French language. As life-long learners, staff participate in university courses and workshops to keep current with best practices to deepen student learning. Our office staff, custodians, and library technician are integral members of our school team, dedicated to connecting with students to enrich their learning experiences. Several of our teachers serve in the capacity of Associate Teachers for student teachers. Our Support Staff work with DSW and CYCW students from Algonquin College.

Our Community

SWC is located in the residential area of Parkwood Hills, in the heart of Nepean. Our families, who represent a rich diversity of cultural backgrounds, are considered to be essential partners in the learning process. Many parents and community volunteers assist with our numeracy and literacy programs, help with fundraising, participate in charitable events, and accompany our students on field trips. Our school is a popular centre in our neighbourhood for such activities as basketball, badminton, volleyball, indoor soccer, and is a host school for the International Languages Program. Students contribute to the community and help others in need through fundraisers, including food drives, the United Way campaign, Terry Fox and Jump Rope for Heart.

In keeping with its fundamental purpose of improving student learning, the SWC School Council actively fosters parental and community involvement in our students’ education, participates in the School’s Improvement Plan, and influences decisions made by our principal, the OCDSB, and the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training.

The School Council works hard to ensure student safety, provides support to staff and students through fundraising efforts, provides parenting workshops for our community and works along staff to foster a positive school climate. The School Council meets monthly on the second Thursday of the month from 5:30pm - 7:30pm and provides information to the SWC community on a regular basis.
